China and Hong Kong

This blog is produced by a group of students from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. In January 2006 these students participated in a course that involved travel to China, including Hong Kong and Shenzhen on the PRC mainland. The course syllabus is (here). The course description is:

This course examines globalization in business by studying the transnational flow of ideas, people, capital, goods and diseases.

As one window into globalization, the course closely examines the Hong Kong and Chinese stock markets, focusing in particular on the Initial Public Offering (IPO) process. We will compare IPOs in Hong Kong and mainland China (1) to each other and (2) to IPOs in the United States. The differing legal environments, customary procedures, financial results, research techniques and valuations will be explored.

The locus for the study is the People’s Republic of China, including both the PRC mainland and its Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. This is a travel course that requires intensive preparation, engagement while abroad and work on a project upon return.
